Kenyan teacher gets a million dollars in Dubai

In Dubai, American actor Hugh Jackman handed a million dollars to a monk from Kenya.

Dubai, UAE. Kenyan Franciscan monk Peter Tabichi was awarded the "Best Teacher in the World" prize with a prize pool of one million dollars. The award ceremony took place the day before in Dubai, the prize was awarded to the winner by American actor Hugh Jackman. Peter Tabichi, 36, teaches science at a rural high school in Kenya. He is also known for giving most of his salary to help the poor.

The charitable foundation of Indian businessman Sunny Varkey, founder of the private school network GEMS Education, has been presenting the prize to the best teacher in the world since 2015. This year, 10 thousand applications from 179 countries were submitted to it. The prize is awarded under the patronage of the UAE Vice President and Prime Minister, Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
