Whale Shark Swims Into Dubai Bay

A stray young whale shark swam into Dubai Bay.

A young whale shark swam into Dubai Bay in the vicinity of Al-Jaddaf. The Ministry of Climate Change and the Environment (MoCCAE), together with the Dubai Police and the Marine Environment Protection Association, carried out an operation to return stray fish back to sea.

After receiving a message about the discovery of a 3-meter shark in Dubai Bay, a group of expert divers and employees of the Department of Biodiversity of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Protection went to catch large fish. The experts developed a rescue plan with minimal risk, taking into account the state of fear and anxiety of the shark.

Dr. Thani Bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environmental Protection, tweeted:

"Yesterday, I closely watched the rescue operation to return the lost shark to the sea. The teamwork of MOCCAE experts and the Dubai police made me proud."

Divers who were entrusted with salvation were divided into three groups. It took five hours for the rescuers to place the young shark on a stretcher between the two boats and pull it out of the bay. Immediately after this, the shark was immediately taken to the waters of the Persian Gulf.

Hiba Al Shekhhi, Acting Director of the MOCCAE Biodiversity Department, said: "I would like to thank everyone who participated in the rescue operation. The staff demonstrated excellent teamwork and saved the frightened young shark."

The doctor noted that at the beginning of this year, the MOCCAE adopted the National Action Plan for the conservation of shark diversity for 2018-2021. The plan provides for specific steps to maintain the population of 72 species of sharks that live in the waters of the UAE.

Also, the coordinated work of the rescue squad was noted by Lt. Col. Rashid Thani Al Ayel, the head of the Marine Security Division of the Dubai Police, who was observing the operation.
