UAE authorities begin to fight illegal online trade

Unlicensed e-commerce sites and social media pages illegally trading in the United Arab Emirates will be closed.

Over the next few days, the Ministry of Economy together with the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of the UAE will close all pages that carry out commercial activities without a license on social networks.

This is to ensure consumer safety on the Internet, said Dr. Hashim Al Nuaimi, head of the consumer protection department, at a press conference in Abu Dhabi.

Al Nuaimi urged consumers to refrain from making transactions on unlicensed websites. He emphasized that the ministry is currently in the process of coordinating with the TRA to close these sites.

The ministry also decided to close down illegal e-commerce sites, as consumers do not have sufficient protection when conducting transactions on them.

Al Nuaimi said the ministry held several meetings with relevant authorities coordinating the closure of such sites. It has been proven that many sites sell fake products and inflate prices. TRA will be responsible for their closure.
